Hey stitchers! After a long week teaching up in Mackinac Island MI, I’m happy to say that Darci and I made it back to WI safe and sound over the weekend. Considering I haven’t had much alone time since our arrival, most of my day today has been spent unpacking, doing trip laundry, and getting everything reorganized for working in the PG studio tomorrow. It’s amazing how fast everything can become disheveled while traveling, so a quick inventory of all the projects I’ve been carrying around with me for the last several days is essential if I want to continue to keep it all together. God forbid I lose a piece… The last thing I need is to be spending precious time reworking things that I’ve already done!
Speaking of reworking projects, most of us have definitely been there a time or two along our creative journeys. It happens to everyone – even the “pros!!!” Take our wool dying expert, Tyler for instance. Despite the fact that he’s well versed in his craft, much of what he does when it comes to dying fabric and wool for specific reasons is experimental, and can be extremely trial and error. Because of this, sometimes the actual outcome of the dying process is a bit on the… unexpected side… which is perfectly alright, but that also means the piece may not end up going into the project it was originally intended for. Much to the delight of BERNINA Barb, that just so happens to be exactly what happened with a garment he was working on dying earlier last week. Seeing an opportunity to play, she quickly intercepted the piece and adopted it as her own with a vision in mind.
As Barb describes it, she saw the piece and immediately decided to, “make lemonade out of lemons.” She took it apart and used on of her favorite machines, the BERNINA L890 QE Serger to do a rolled hem around several pieces of the fabric and turned it into two beautiful scarves:
A three thread narrow flatlock stitch was used to join two pieces for the larger of the two scarves:
If you’ve ever wondered if a serger like the L890 QE is right for you, the proof is in the pudding! Sergers can be wonderful additions to your sewing room for a variety of purposes including seam finishing, inserting elastic, decorating projects with flowers or other trims, finishing hems and facing edges, gathering/adding ruffle to garments and home décor projects, and seaming on knits more efficiently than standard machines. You can quickly repair torn seams, make matching PJ’s for the kiddos, or whip up a quick gift for any occasion. They’re super handy to have around!
If you’re thinking about adding a serger to your sewing room arsenal and aren’t sure which way to go, just take it from Barb! The BERNINA L890 QE is perfectly suited for working with all types of fabrics, including knits as well as wovens. Not to mention, the L890 QE will give you the ultimate serger experience when you combine the many preprogrammed stitches with the beauty of decorative threads! It has extra sweet features like the one-step BERNINA Air Threader for fast and easy threading, an intuitive touch screen, the BERNINA Free Hand System (FHS), fast, quiet, and precise movements, and total stitch control to name a few!
