MBH5 Bock Release Week #7 –“Summer Star”

Hey everyone! Even though I’m traveling for Market at the moment and not in my studio, the show we call Blockheads 5 must still go on! This week my friend and fellow Moda sister Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life takes her turn dazzling us with a block contribution she calls, “Summer Star.” Named in honor of the sparkling stars in a summer night sky, the “Summer Star” block is made up of a nice combination of flying geese units, and everyone’s favorite – half-square triangles.

Just like last week, the majority of block piecing techniques for “Summer Star” are the same as Sherri’s instructions call for. The only thing I changed was: A and B to 2 3/8″ – then cut in half once, and H, K, J, and I to 4 1/4″ – then cut in half twice. By doing it this way you will end up with three units that are not used – save those. C, D, G, E, and F should be done according to what the patterns says.

To review, the reason I made these changes is because I don’t like wasting time and effort by making units oversized and then having to trim them down. That doesn’t make any sense to me. I would much rather save the time by using the correct math and make them true to size to begin with. Not feeling confident in your math skills? No biggie. Do what works best for you!

For Sherri’s exclusive tips on how to complete this block with ease, please visit her blog by clicking HERE! For more information on the Blockheads 5 Quilt-Along, check out the MBH5 Main Page by clicking HERE. And don’t forget – if you ever need any of the past MBH5 blocks and can’t remember where to look, you can always find them posted on my archive by visiting http://www.lisabongean.com and clicking the “Quilt-Alongs” tab.

In case you’re late to the party, just and FYI – I’m using Bella Solid Silver (9900 183) for the background of my quilt, and Bella Solid American Blue (9900 174) consistently throughout the entire thing. The rest will be done with selections from the same soft, muted collection of Bella Solids that we put together for this project called “Sundown.” The entire collection is available for purchase on our website by clicking the buttons below!

As always, if you have any questions regarding this block please feel free to leave me a comment here on the blog! You can also visit the Blockheads 5 Main Page for more information on Moda Blockheads 5 and how it all works by clicking HERE. I also recommend hooking up with the virtual Blockheads community for even more support by checking out their Official Moda Blockheads Facebook Group.

Alright friends, now that MBH5 is in the books for another week, it’s time for me to focus my attention back on preparing for Market, which starts in only a few short days! As busy as I am, I will do my best to join you all in the comments during LIVE with Jess tomorrow on YouTube, starting at 1:00 p.m. CST. Jess is going to be giving us a peek into her sewing room by showing us what she’s been busy working on lately. You can watch right along with me by clicking the STITCH button below!

Then, after LIVE with Jess we’ll switch gears over to the CommentSold studio where we continue to celebrate Primitive Gatherings and 20 years in business. In case you haven’t heard, this week we’re taking 20% OFF all fabric pre-cuts and yardage through Sunday, October 29th, 2023 (sale excludes Tilda and pre-order items)!

Don’t miss out on the fun you know we always have during our LIVE shows… Set your reminders now. Then tune in and watch! Maybe I’ll see you there in the comments. Take care everyone, and happy shopping! ~LHB
