July 19 – Do you wash-clean your quilts? If so, any special tips to share?
Hmmm…I wash quilts that are used on beds… Warm wash on gently cycle with a mild detergent…then in the dryer to dry on the lowest heat setting…
I will also wash quilts when I want them to look old..all crinkled up and the quilting sunk in…these I put in a hot dryer…
I do not wash quilts that are meant to hang on a wall, aka…my best quilts… My wool appliqué quilts fall into this category, which is the first thing someone asks when they see a quilt with wool appliqué on it…..I do not spend many hours of my time and very expensive hand dyed wools and fancy threads to have someone unconsciously drool on them! LOL…so that means NO one is sleeping under my wool applique quilts and they should not get dirty…dusty maybe!!! If they need freshening up I put them in the dryer on air dry to knock the dust off…if they are small quilts/table mats/runners I use a lint roller… Can quilts with wool appliqué be washed? Yes…cold water and then laid flat to dry…I would hand wash in bathtub if I had to wash a wool appliqué quilt…I’d also throw in some ice cubes…If you get wool hot and wet it will bleed..so the colder the water the better. Wash it and get it out and laid flat on something to dry on…a floor covered with plastic drop cloth would work well..
Make sure you go and visit everyone else and see what’s on their blogs today!!!
